Instructor: Kenna Whitnell, Cosmetic Chemist

Making natural skincare can be confusing when all you have to work with is a recipe. As soon as you want to change an oil, adjust a texture, or extend shelf life, you need to know what each ingredient is doing in the formula and what keeps the product safe to use.

The Natural Aromatic Skincare Formulation Certificate Program is a comprehensive 10-module program that teaches you formulation step by step. You begin with chemistry essentials, skin science, and safety, then study ingredients and product systems before you make anything in the lab.

You'll learn with a cosmetic chemist who has more than a decade of experience and over 100 products on the market. Kenna teaches formulation the way it is practised professionally, with a product brief first and every ingredient chosen for its function.

The program brings your aromatherapy knowledge into cosmetic formulation, with full lessons on essential oil safety and essential oil chemistry as they apply to skincare.

This program will prepare you to:

  • design a skincare product starting with a brief, and choose the system type that fits it
  • select carrier oils, butters, waxes, hydrosols, humectants, emulsifiers, and actives for their function in a formula
  • formulate for different skin types and conditions with a working understanding of the skin barrier and skin pH
  • preserve water-based products and assess contamination risk and shelf life
  • use essential oils safely in skincare and separate aromatherapeutic intention and cosmetic function
  • make oil serums, balms, body butters, hydrosol mists, and emulsions in guided labs
  • evaluate your products for feel, scent, and stability
  • prepare formula sheets, batch records, and labels with correct INCI ingredient names
  • understand the basics of cosmetic regulations, packaging, and small-batch manufacturing if you plan to sell
