The Practitioner Is Part of the Therapeutic Relationship

Aug 26, 2026

Professional training often teaches practitioners to direct their attention toward the person seeking support. We listen, observe, ask careful questions, and consider what may be helpful. Yet the practitioner is also present in every therapeutic relationship.

We bring our histories, wounds, protective instincts, values, wisdom, and ways of understanding the world into the room. These parts of us do not automatically diminish our work. They do mean that self-awareness is part of practicing with care.

The Aromatic Mirror: Understanding Ourselves, Supporting Others begins with this recognition. The three-session experiential course, led by Marika Fleri, is founded on a simple premise: before we can recognize archetypal patterns in the people we support, we must first recognize them within ourselves.

Why looking inward matters

Personal experience can shape the way we interpret what a client shares, the feelings that arise in response, and the instincts we bring into the relationship. A desire to protect may be connected to our own understanding of safety. Empathy may be influenced by wounds we recognize. Wisdom may carry the imprint of what we have lived through and learned.

The Aromatic Mirror creates structured space for participants to notice these themes through aromatic inhalation, guided meditation, reflective journaling, archetypal exploration, discussion, ritual, and case study analysis. The purpose is not simply to gather more information about essential oils. It is to examine what our aromatic experiences may reveal about the inner patterns that accompany us into professional practice.

Archetypes as tools for reflection

Within the course, archetypes are used as tools for self-reflection and therapeutic insight. They offer a way to explore recurring themes in human experience and to consider how those themes may be present within us before we begin looking for them in others.

Essential oils as mirrors

The course approaches essential oils through direct aromatic experience. Inhalation is accompanied by journaling, guided reflection, meditation, and discussion. These methods give participants opportunities to notice their responses and consider the meanings or themes that emerge.

Aromatic experiences and archetypal mapping are used to explore joy, self-worth, vitality, meaning, transition, and grounding. Each oil becomes part of a wider reflective process that connects personal awareness with professional life.

When personal reflection becomes professional insight

The final session, Beyond the Mirror, carries the exploration into therapeutic practice. Participants consider how archetypal themes may present in clients and examine therapeutic applications through oncology and palliative care case studies. The session also addresses grief, caregiver support, resilience, ethics, and integration.

Looking inward does not remove the complexity of supporting another person. It can, however, help practitioners cultivate greater authenticity, presence, and therapeutic awareness. In the philosophy of The Aromatic Mirror, personal reflection becomes professional insight. Understanding what we bring into the relationship can help us approach the people we support with greater awareness.
