Why this information matters to your blending

  1. Research and chemistry make your essential oil blends better… and safer. The field of aromatherapy is rapidly advancing in line with evidence-based research. Essential oils all contain bioactive chemical constituents which have been scientifically shown to have many therapeutic properties, and these findings continue to grow by the dozens annually. However, these chemical constituents carry important safety considerations, and this is a key factor in creating safe aromatherapy blends that are most appropriate for the conditions you’re addressing.
  2. You need to know how to store your essential oils safely, and chemistry is the key. Each chemical constituent in an essential oil has unique properties, though they can be grouped into “families” that share some common factors. Chemical families have their own physical properties which can tell us a lot about an essential oil’s safety and even how to store them correctly! For example, essential oils such as lemon that are rich in the constituent limonene—a constituent in the monoterpene family—have some of the shortest shelf lives. If they are not stored well, their bioactivity can decrease quickly.
  3. You need to understand the differences between the two types of lemon (Citrus limon) essential oil. Limonene is a heavily researched chemical constituent. But did you know that there are two types of limonene? And do you know why that matters? Extracting an essential oil can be done in many ways, and we often see that if the same plant part is extracted via different methods, their chemical profiles will differ. This is the case when lemon peel is extracted via steam distillation or expression (also known as cold pressed).
  4. Using essential oils wisely supports a healthy planet. We are sensitive to the many global environmental issues that are heavily impacting the overall health of our planet and the plants. Now more than ever, we need to use essential oils ethically and responsibly to help mitigate their overuse. Don’t forget: less is more when it comes to essential oils!
